Yanru Xiao is a 2022 research intern in Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group (ASG).

He is a Ph.D. student in computer science at Old Dominion University, advised by Dr. Cong Wang.  Before that, he received a B.E. in computer science and technology from Central South University in 2017.

His research focuses on robustness in machine learning, especially on adversarial attack and defense in computer vision systems.  He developed an adversarial attack to enable transferable attack in image retrieval systems.  He also developed an adversarial attack method to protect privacy and an adversarial detection method to enhance robustness in such systems.

Besides research, Yanru enjoys indoor sports like badminton, basketball, and outdoor activities such as fishing and hiking.
