Research in the Era of Vibe Coding: How Artificial Intelligence Redefines Expertise

Fifty years ago, fixing a manuscript full of spelling and grammar errors would entail a thorough, meticulous review by human reviewers. Today, we use spell-check, citation managers, search engines, and other tools, like Grammarly, as an integral part of our workflow. Those tools were once considered dishonest and even blatant cheating by a previous generation of academia. Yet few would question their legitimacy today—or the integrity of those who use them.

The reason for that shift is simple. Tools such as spell-check, the Internet, and email became inevitable because of their unprecedented power to enhance productivity, allowing us to direct attention to what truly matters in our work—namely, the ideas and theory themselves. We now stand at an inflection point that is similarly transformative, but distinctly larger in magnitude. Computer science is advancing rapidly with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), and a week seldom passes without reports of new, groundbreaking developments. As AI continues to permeate research and academia, the question is not whether these technologies will be adopted, but rather how we adapt our workflows and expertise around them and how to ensure the safety of those tools.
