At the same ti me\, however\, most of the existing body of work has focused on Western po pulations\, particularly in the US and Europe\, despite other research sho wing that security and privacy perceptions and practices vary across count ries and cultures. Consequently\, the security and privacy solutions desig ned and evaluated in the West can quickly fall apart when used or applied to other regions in the “majority world\,” leaving end-users at risk.\ n\nIn this talk\, Collins will draw from a series of studies across the ma jority world to highlight unique security and privacy challenges. The firs t part will focus on Kenya\, examining privacy tensions with mobile loan a pplications and cybercafes. The second part will go beyond Kenya to show h ow these challenges recur across other majority world contexts. Finally\, he will discuss solutions to these challenges before sharing promising dir ections for future work.\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nCollins Munyendo i s a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California\, Berkeley and an Incoming Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the National Universi ty of Singapore. His research focuses on human-centered security and priva cy. He investigates how and why people interact with\, understand\, use\, and even misuse security and privacy tools\, then designs and builds solut ions that better align with users’ needs and expectations. He publishes at flagship conferences in computer security\, privacy\, and human-compute r interaction\, including IEEE S&P\, USENIX Security\, CCS\, and CHI. His work has been recognized with several awards\, including the John Karat St udent Research Award\, a Google PhD Fellowship\, a Distinguished Paper Awa rd at IEEE S&P\, the IAPP SOUPS Privacy Award\, and a Top Reviewer Award a t CCS.
